Master of Arts in Music

The Master of Arts in Music degree is a two-year degree designed to provide opportunities for advance study in music and for developing trained, professional musicians in the professional areas of performance and general musicianship. The M.A. in Music program seeks to provide professional musical training in both church and secular music, and to provide opportunities for students to study and experience music, and to share their musical life with the public. The M.A. in Music degree is awarded upon the successful completion of 48 semester hours of graduate work.

Degree Outcomes

Upon the completion of this program students will:
Plan and direct a broad variety of service opportunities in the church and the community.
Become better performers in a solo, choral, or instrumental capacity.
Have new insights, perspectives, and practices in musical performances.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively make and arrange music in diverse musical styles.

Curriculum

The M.A. in Music requires 48 semester hours of course work comprised of 12 semester hours of theological studies and 36 semester hours of professional studies.

Candidates in Piano, Organ, Accompanying, Conducting, Vocal, Orchestral Instruments, and Praise Ministry must present a full recital and receive a passing grade. Candidates in Composition and Music Business must submit a thesis and receive a passing grade. Candidates in Computer Music must submit two independent final projects and receive a passing grade. In addition, candidates in Conducting, Composition, Vocal, Music Business, and Media Production must pass a Keyboard Proficiency Examination before graduation.

Keyboard Proficiency Examination:

Candidates in Conducting, Composition, Vocal, Music Business, and Computer Music must pass an examination in piano before graduation. These examinations are administered during the registration periods prior to the fall and spring terms.

 


 

Entrance Audition Requirements

Audition

Applicants, who are auditioning for programs that require a pre-screen review, are still required to send a pre-screen recording by January 1, 2015.

Live Audition Appointment will be available starting January 2015.

Applicants are encouraged to audition/interview in person whenever possible.

Email confirmation of the audition appointment will be issued to the applicant at the email address provided in the application from the Bethesda Music Department once it is scheduled.

M.A. in Music Entrance Audition Requirement

Piano

All works are to be performed from memory
Prelude and Fugue from Bach's Well- Tempered Clavier or a major work by Bach
Entire sonata by Mozart or Beethoven
Major work by Schubert, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary

Organ

Applicants will prepare on audition of two contrasting movements from a Baroque, Classical, or Romantic period.  

Accompaniment

Applicants will prepare on audition of two contrasting movements from a Baroque,  Classical, or Romantic period.

Vocal Music

All works will be performed from memory.
An Italian song from the 17th or 18th century
A German song from the 17th or 18th century
An Opera Aria from the 17th or 18th century

Composition

Applicants will submit a portfolio of two representative scores and tapes three weeks  prior to the scheduled audition date.  
An interview with department faculty is required on the audition date.

Conducting

Applicants will perform on instrument or voice. An interview with department faculty is required on the audition date.

Orchestral Music
